Ellerman Bombs. Philippe Tosi photographed dozens of them yesterday from his backyard observatory in Nîmes, France. A handful of the bomb flashes are circled: https://imgur.com/QITHhXO Ellerman bombs are magnetic explosions about one-millionth as powerful as true solar flares. They are named after physicist Ferdinand Ellerman who studied the tiny blasts in the early 20th century. Of course, "tiny" is relative. A single Ellerman bomb releases about 1026 ergs of energy--equal to about 100,000 World War II atomic bombs. Why are these explosions happening? This magnetic map of AR2835 provides the answer: https://imgur.com/gZCpUCE Note the ragged mixture of yellow and green around the periphery of the sunspot's primary core. These are magnetic fields of opposite polarity bumping together. Such a mixture is explosive. Ellerman bombs mark the points where magnetic reconnection is taking place. If this mixing continues, we could soon see a real solar flare, so stay tuned. [ link to www.spaceweather.com (secure)] ~*Ride the Wave*~ |

Spur of the moment, then, theorizing that perhaps even that might be a beginning of a plausible explanation for the seemingly purposeless wonders of the world like the great pyramid, and that such structures may have been rendered inoperable by a sudden electromagnetic upheaval. And then there's the problem ado with the evidence of magnetic pole shifts, and how it's a simple enough process to see proof it has happened, but yet such a mystery to determine an accurate timing of such events. It makes me wonder if tomorrow a flare came and turned civilization upside down, and a mere iota survived to tell the tale... How would the game of telephone transfigure the history? Where would blame be placed? Would people be wondering twelve thousand years from now where all the knowledge went? I think it would be a rough ride if I were one to survive. How to weave succinctly that the source of all energy that makes life possible is one and the same as that which nearly destroyed everything... |
