They are lucky in some regards that the first quake was 7.8 knowing now there was alot of pressure still there to produce a 7.5...i suspect there'll just be 5s now to release any pressure |

And an earlier question I posted elsewhere… has there been any modern precedent for such a big quake swarm in a relatively small area? If so, based on what’s happened before, what might we expect to happen next?
Quoting: Larphillips I am in no way an expert, but I can't recall a swarm like this in such a time frame and it is not over yet. Maybe one of the others can give an anwer to that, but I will do some research myself and get back to you. And as for another big one coming there? Who knows. That second one at a different spot was also not particularly expected. Here is an article that explains the big earthquakes of today: [ link to www.newscientist.com (secure)] From that article: The earthquakes happened along the East Anatolian fault, which runs through eastern Turkey, from south-west to north-east. The first quake, which struck as people slept, caused tremors as far away as Cyprus and Egypt.
Scientists say the second tremor is likely to have been a particularly sizeable aftershock, triggered by the initial lurch in tectonic plates that caused the first earthquake. “Once it jerks in one place, it’s like a chain reaction, it starts jerking in another places,” says David Rothery at the Open University, UK.
However, there is a chance that the second quake could have been caused by the rupture of an associated fault segment stressed by the first earthquake, which would be considered a separate event. |
