I thought these were some clever ideas to create cheap grow bags and even a raised bed further into the video with chicken wire and weed cloth. In 2020 I purchased a crap ton of grow bags and they work really well. The price on those things is rediculous now though. I like them so much better than the 5 gallon buckets I tried in the past. Buckets are an option too though if you have them handy.

If anyone was thinking about trying to grow some things, but your yard isn't quite prepared for planting, these might be an option.

Tangy, thanks for that info. I'm not a gardener, but I have had thoughts of trying it at times, even if just to grow some tomatoes since those are fairly easy. Just not sure if I want to battle the squirrels. I definitely would use the bucket or grow bag method though, so I appreciate your post. A friend of mine never really gardened either but a mutual friend built her a great little raised bed. Super small, manageable, and she had a good outcome right out of the gate last year. It was the the cutest little garden and she got a fair amount of produce off of it! Now she's having him build 3 or 4 more, lol.

I'm not outdoorsy and it's taken me many years just to get semi-okay with houseplants, so I'm still easing my way into the notion of any veggie planting. My big step this year is planting some canna bulbs in big pots around my patio. My neighbor has too many and I have wanted to do a bit more out there. It seems like something even I could handle and not too much work, which is what I want. Plus, my hummingbird visitors like them.

Love the garden stuff. The book that Darth recommended and I enjoyed was …

Gardening When It Counts: Growing Food in Hard Times (Mother Earth News Books for Wiser Living Book 5) Kindle

And don’t forget to have a way to collect snow and rain water ready for when the power goes out.

Awesome!! Tomatoes are a good start, and super easy to preserve. Zucchini is pretty prolific and easy to preserve too. If you can afford the grow bags, they would be better than the ikea bags for sure. If gardening seems daunting you can focus on just one crop and see how close you can get to preserving 1 years worth of that crop. Consider the other plants as side projects. Then the next year, add another plant to the focus list. Tomatoes are great because you can just toss them whole into the freezer until you can use or maybe can them.

These bags in the pic (not cleaned out or ammended yet from last year) are going into the 3rd year, and have been left out all seasons. Still holding up like new. My yard is mostly pool, and the beds along the side of the yard are not great soil and a ton of rocks. (we are at the base of a mountain) I have one raised bed I had built in, but it's only 17 feet by 8 feet. (you can see my onions in there so far)

This past week we put down some weed cloth and wood mulch under the 4 x 4's we have under the pots. But if your yard doesn't flood you can put them straight on the dirt. I put mine on two 4 x 4's from the beginning so they would be above any occational soggy flood that area gets lol.

These are the 5 and 10 gallon sizes, Just piled up waiting to be ammended.

My wonderful son built me a raised garden out back of the garage some years ago. I did the whole $64 tomato crap out there the first year, doing all the manure and stuff on youtube etc.
The next year there were some demonic weeds out of the abyss of hell out there. I pulled them out, but they came right back. Each year thereafter, the demon weeds got bigger and taller, like 6+ feet and I'm not kidding.
Last year, I paid a guy $250 to clean out the mega weeds around my garage, I told him I was afraid to go back there. I have also tried tomatoes in containers.
The animals got all the ones that didn't have black ends.
Grew some lettuce that bolted in two weeks.
I have never in my entire life seen weeds like the ones around my garage,. WTAF.

this book: hilarious

The $64 Tomato
Bill Alexander had no idea that his simple dream of having a vegetable garden and small orchard in his backyard would lead him into life-and-death battles with groundhogs, webworms, weeds, and weather; midnight expeditions in the dead of winter to dig up fresh thyme; and skirmishes with neighbors who feed the vermin (i.e., deer). Not to mention the vacations that had to be planned around the harvest, the near electrocution of the tree man, the limitations of his own middle-aged body, and the pity of his wife and kids. When Alexander runs (just for fun!) a costbenefit analysis, adding up everything from the live animal trap to the Velcro tomato wraps and then amortizing it over the life of his garden, it comes as quite a shock to learn that it cost him a staggering $64 to grow each one of his beloved Brandywine tomatoes. But as any gardener will tell you, you can't put a price on the unparalleled pleasures of providing fresh food for your family.

Good advice about the water. San Diego doesn't get too much snow unless you are in the mountains, and hardly any rain, although it is raining right now! I'm glad we have the pool. We hve about 20 of those big huge blue tubs (like for horse water) So we can let pool water sit in those to de-chlorinate. Always the threat of drought here.

It looks great Tangy. I like the look of the growbags, and good to know the Ikea ones aren't the best.

Who knows, maybe one of these years I'll at least attempt some tomatoes. I just don't see me ever really getting into gardening though, there's nothing appealing about it to me other than fresh veggies. I don't find it "therapeutic" as some do (although I get it), and I don't like dirt, bugs, being in the sun/heat, etc. That might make me high maintenance and if so, I'm cool with that.

Dave, thank you for putting these numbers out there. People don't comprehend this sort of stuff, let's call it a 700% increase on farming, we also means an increase on livestock feed, which means an increase in meat etc. People don't seem to grasp the butterfly effect.

Re: Earthquake Thread ~ Always Updated*5.3 Mid-Indian Ridge*5.2 Mid-Indian Ridge ~ Pg 20449
WTAF.

I relate, this is my thinking as well. I just know the squirrels and possibly raccoons and opossums will get to whatever I grow. I still haven't forgiven the squirrels for a ruining a beautiful hanging plant I was so proud of a few years ago, so I can only imagine how pissed I'd be if they ate my tomatoes. The weeds are another good point, not sure I want to fight that battle.
