There REALLY IS something strange in western sky around sunset...!!!

By the way, got to the everglades right at sunset, armed with binoculars, camera with telephoto lens, and sony camcorder but to no avail. Cloud cover over the horizon up to at least 20 degrees. :(

I saw it tonight for the first time. I live just south of Memphis, TN. Not sure what it is...

Exactly any time you can get people off their techno devices to go outside and have a looksie is a real good thing. We all forget just how vast and beautiful the Milky Way is. My favorite quote from from the Desidarata "Unbeknownst to you the universe is unfolding as it should ".

I'm going to a local State Forest tomorrow after work, and will go again Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. There is a lookout tower which is taller than all the trees.

I hope it will be a good point for me to see the horizon during sunset. I don't have good equipment at all but I will do what I can.

iPhone, two different Kodak point and shoots (one 7.2MP one 12 and records 720P video) and a decent-ish tripod and some nearly useless binoculars.

I have the SkyView Free app on my phone, so I'll try to get it calibrated using the sun as a reference point once I'm up in the tower.

I'll record myself doing all of this using the 7.2MP camera, and try to use the better cam to capture anything else.

If anyone has any other suggestions please do tell me!

By the way I'm in south central Indiana, about an hour south of Indy.

Faint glow just below and to the left of the moon. I can no longer see it though. I went outside to try to snap a pic, but either it is out of view, or just not visible.

I saw it yesterday on my way home from town. Before yesterday I was sadly mistaken and was looking at Venus. Way wrong, and way off. I now know what I'm looking for, as I've "seen the light" if you will. Thanks.

I've been outside since 6pm, its now 7:27pm central...Its now dark. I live in south Louisiana and have a very unobstructed view of the skyline. I live out among sugar cane fields and they have been harvested so, I have a very wide flat view of the horizon. I scanned the entire western sky from north to south several times with binoculars. I saw nothing that resembled a firery V or flaming wings. Just jets way off in the distance leaving their trail behind. Not saying you guys are lying... just saying I see nothing here like you guys describe.

What I saw was almost across from Venus. Might not be the same object, but whatever it was, it is no longer there. I did watch it long enough to know that is was no a plane.

The sun isn't setting north. In fact, it is setting just south of due west (263 degrees). Anyway, I was outside tonight 1 hour before sunset until dark and didn't see ANYTHING. Just clear skies. Not one contrail, not a 'flaming v', nothing. I searched south to north, from horizon to zenith. So if anyone else saw something, it has to be in the atmosphere local to them...not a celestial object.

In my heart, I do not believe Astromut is a shill...you can flame me for this, but before this thread I enjoyed him using his wits to debunk, I think, 100% of the various space events we followed here.

I,for the life of me, don't understand his position here. It is almost as if he is scared. Or he is pissed he and his beloved community didn't find this thing first.

Just curious, why scan the entire western horizon? It should be, from reports here, just a bit above the horizon, south of the sun by a few fingers breath as the sun sets. I want to know so I don't make the same "mistakes." Thanks!

Strictly off the main topic - the combo of Venus and the Moon last night was VERY cool looking. I'm high desert, so not a lot of light pollution.

On topic, I didn't see it again last night. Saw it for almost a week though. Hope I will spot it tonight.

Nice plane contrail, looks like it's moving pretty good in only a few seconds. What's this bullshit about it being stationary for half an hour?

I've already seen this phenomenon before. That's what you don't get through your thick skull, I know what it is because I've seen it. It's a goddamn plane contrail. I shot some footage tonight. I was going to do it live but unfortunately I forgot the USB cable to my phone so I wasn't able to tether it to the laptop for the internet. Nevertheless I proceeded to shoot a few planes over the course of half an hour showing various contrails that match the descriptions and videos that various people have been posting here.

I had my telescope out tonight. Saw Venus. Beautiful! Saw a great crescent moon...awesome! Saw several other stars that I don't know, and a few that were really bright and had some cool colors too! As for the object...sorry it wasn't there. I am in SE OH and it wasn't anywhere in sight. I was looking for it, to no avail. My guess is a plane that flies the same route at the same time and the contrails give it the "v" look...

I was really trying to believe...really I was...but nothing.
