I don't have good equipment at all but I will do what I can. iPhone, two different Kodak point and shoots (one 7.2MP one 12 and records 720P video) and a decent-ish tripod and some nearly useless binoculars. I have the SkyView Free app on my phone, so I'll try to get it calibrated using the sun as a reference point once I'm up in the tower. I'll record myself doing all of this using the 7.2MP camera, and try to use the better cam to capture anything else. If anyone has any other suggestions please do tell me! BoxerLvr User ID: 1298401 Puerto Rico 10/08/2013 08:33 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | ... Quoting: mehitable lives From the proximity to the Moon, I would guess Venus. It was to the left of the Moon last night. yep that is Venus ... keep looking - farther north and closer to the ground lol, so it's not south west anymore? It's north now? Legit. OK I can see how that could be misunderstood ... but I have stated clearly a hundred times now that if you draw a line from Venus straight to the ground and follow the horizon from that point - to where the sun is setting (north ?) you will see it (from my POV) just past the half-way point ... less than an inch off the horizon it will be out of the frame, if you are looking at the setting sun (and it is in the center of your camera screen) - but in the next frame to the left, with the sun being your starting point is that better ? ... OK now go look for yourself The sun isn't setting north. In fact, it is setting just south of due west (263 degrees). Anyway, I was outside tonight 1 hour before sunset until dark and didn't see ANYTHING. Just clear skies. Not one contrail, not a 'flaming v', nothing. I searched south to north, from horizon to zenith. So if anyone else saw something, it has to be in the atmosphere local to them...not a celestial object. Quoting: Dr. Astro You, who couldn't even identify Venus, are in NO position to judge my credibility. Full stop. the reason, I mis-identified Venus is because of my unfamilarity with the Stellarium program, which (when I first looked) showed me Venus almost over my head - and I like so many others was going on the clues (first star, brighter that any others) I did "verify" that I WAS'nt looking at venus with a star chart So you couldn't even operate a simple star chart properly that is designed for use by lay people, but you think you can judge me and be the authority on whether I'm "credible" or not? Ha! I fully expect for you to show us a comtrail - and nothing else - because that is what YOU BELIEVE we are seeing - but it is not Quoting: sunnyYou're so predictable. When I show you the same phenomenon and then prove it's just a contrail you'll bitch that I only showed a contrail but magically what you saw must have been something else because YOU claim you saw it on fire. You, the expert of astronomy, who took half a thread to identify Venus after vehemently telling posters she wasn't looking at Venus. if you can show us a contrail that looks like a flaming V - and it stays apparent for a half an hour in the same place No. You have not shown a "flaming V" that "stays in the same place for half an hour." |
