There REALLY IS something strange in western sky around sunset...!!!

with that said, that particular pic no doubt does show a contrail...

It's interesting but it's not at the right time of day or the specific location that SunnyDaze and the others specified. It is also obvious that this IS a contrail and we can see the movement of the plane through the sky. Movement is NOT obvious with the "sunset object". Based on evidence like this we might look at a comet going through the sky and just say casually that it's a contrail because...it superficially looks like one.

I think we need more observations at the time and general location (just above the horizon) that has been specified. If people keep seeing the SAME thing with the SAME appearance and magnified characteristics around the SAME time, and it does not appear to be moving (like the plane in this video), then we have an object worthy of study....

Let us not be caught in the trap of "look-a-likes". The specific object must be studied, as it can be found.

I love to hear that, Esmee, because I've always been fascinated by the sky and I wish people would pay more attention to it in general. The planets and constellations and weather patterns are always endlessly fascinating, and then when you add in comets and meteorites, etc....it's a show that never gets old. I'm so glad you and others are discovering it, regardless of what we find out about this object. It's just such a positive thing!

This has been a very amusing thread.

I have been here since day 1, and have replied a few times near the start, and I called Venus on some of the posts as that was what people were reporting and putting up pics of.

Then pics showed up showing flaming V`s from a distance red and Orangey in Colour, with very short tails, and some with longer tails. But looking like very bright objects almost stationary in the Sky, very close to the Horizon, and fairly close to the setting sun.

I`m 100% in my mind, convinced, that this is just Jet aircraft. This phenomenom only occurs when conditions are right, ie when the sun sets with clear sky`s etc. The length of the Vee is determined by the distance of the plane from you, longer vee if close, shorter vee if far.

Dr. Astro has tried very hard to explain this, but a few posters will not budge from their beliefs. If this object is not a plane, and something else, It would have been discovered long before we could have possibly seen it with the naked eye, and that's the truth.

I look forward to the next 100 pages, cause this is where this is going.

We've looked out in that direction now several times at sunset. It's just the moon and Venus. I don't know what all the hoopla is.

Also do some of you honestly believe that the government would tell you if something dangerous is on its way? Course they wouldn't it would be a huge blackout everywhere. I would rather believe the eyewitness videos and accounts that have seen something rather than the government I would trust any word they say in world changing events.

Another thing that concerns me, is comet ison. I for one believe it is the same comet that has been coming every 333 years, NASA hasn't even told us the length of the orbit in years. Comet ison also has a green tail which means it's poisonous, (again something NASA doesnt tell you) and could contain deadly pathogens, if its orbit is 333 years we have no idea what stuff it's picked up through space through its journey, did this comet cause the Black Death? Comets are life and death bringers simple as that

I believe I saw this object several sunsets in a row in the early spring of 2012. Position slightly different from what is being described here, but timing was the same. First evening I saw it, I explained it to myself as a contrail from something moving almost directly away from me. But when I noticed it the next two evenings in a row, in the exact same location and time, I had to question if a jet would be flying, and creating a contrail in the exact time and location 3 sunsets in a row.

I continue to watch for it on those occasions when I have a good view of the sunset on a clear enough evening.

reporting in ... socxed in with clouds - I'm guessing four layers deep ... overhead - clear blue sky - weird ain't it

I got my batteries ... put them in, screen came up, took some sample pictures ... same as I remember, came in here and down loaded the software - not compadible ... took me over an hour to locate the manual to get the model # all it said on it was "bushnell" - so I could look up a driver on-line - but all that is is misdirect to a $30 driver downloader - right ... NOT today ... finally found the manual (packed away three moves ago) but bushnell doesn't have technical support - I can understand why the driver needs an upgrade, I bought this cam/binocular eight years ago (they still sell them - for a lot more now)

Bushnell's most FAQ is "how do I download / upload the driver for Win 8 ... it directs you to "click" the more info button, and there isn't one (wtf) - so I went to divice mgr but the soft ware I have didn't load up - I have no "imaging device" - I took pictures AND MOVIES FOLKS ... all I have to do is figure out how to up date my driver - to accept this software

so I have ten pages to catch up on ... that was a welcome sight to me ... Venus is up, way to the right -beneath the almost quarter moon ... in blue skys here, I can see the Rockies, but there is a wall of grey behind them - I feel like I am in the Truman show, and that's the wall of our illusion ...just behind the rockies

it took me six months to get the compadible driver for my printer - had to buy a new scanner, because they didn't upgrade ... now this camera ... I guess I should be glad that it works at all ... it got a sim card adapter maybe that will work ... just can't deal with it any more today ... want to see what has happened while I was gone - guess no one believe this is Ison - is clear - but it gets pinned

I think a video might be more revealing, or a set of photos over the length of time it's out so we can determine if it's moving. Some of these pics do look like contrails, but as I say....so could a comet. I think the most important point is if the object is stationary and found repeatedly in the same place at the same time.

It is not a Comet. Purely contrails.

I'm unable to see it from my house. It's very low on the horizon. Had to go down to the river where I could see the sky without obstruction. Just sayin :) What I'm seeing looks like an orange ball with a trail behind it. Same place every time. Seems to be getting brighter and larger. The people that are obsessed with trying to debunk this is making it more curious indeed.

I quietly came to this conclusion a few days ago.

If an object were approaching from below the ecliptic, it would be visible in the southern hemisphere first.

Then as it crossed the ecliptic it would begin to be sighted in the northern hemisphere.

If one were to position oneself for the best possible viewing of this planet as it approached years ago, the south pole would be ideal.

Interesting that the U.S. set up an infrared telescope in the Antarctic in 2007:

"When it gets up and running, the SPT will help astronomers understand dark energy’s influence on the expansion of the Universe, and precisely measure the cosmic microwave background radiation.

Unlike Hubble, or the major visible light observatories here on Earth, the South Pole Telescope images at the submillimetre spectrum. This is a region in between radio waves and infrared radiation. Perfect for seeing objects coming in from the south that emit little, if any, light. And what we do know about this object is that it is only visible when benefiting from the light of the sun at sunset.

Of course, with the shutdown even the Antarctic observatory is offline.

Perhaps those who have been observing the southern skies have seen all they need to see and know all they need to know? If the object is now visible intermittently in the northern hemisphere, then there is no need for the Antarctic infrared telescope.
