"Sea water and fresh water are placed on opposite sides of a membrane that allows ions through, but prevents the passage of water molecules. The ions will move to the fresh water to balance osmotic forces, which will create a charge difference that can be harvested for various purposes. The voltage produced in a single one of these cells is small, but the source of the power is essentially unlimited and is available 24 hours a day.

The small voltage per cell, however, makes this an impractical method of producing hydrogen by splitting water. It's possible to reach the requisite voltages if enough of these cells are placed in series, but this requires dozens of them, and so many membranes that the cost of this sort of apparatus is prohibitive.

That's where the bacteria come in. When given a source of organic material, the bacteria will harvest its electrons by oxidizing the carbon and convert their energy into the cell's main power supply, ATP. But they have to put those electrons somewhere. If they lack a convenient electron acceptor, they'll use an inconvenient one, even if it happens to be outside the cell (this is the principle behind the uranium-munching bacteria we discussed recently). Hook the bacteria up to an electrode, and they'll push their electrons into that.

This also provides a relatively low-voltage source of electricity, again too low to power the splitting of water on its own. People have gotten bacteria-powered hydrogen production to work, but only by applying an additional source of voltage.

So, the authors went ahead and merged the two. Five fresh/salt water exchange cells were placed in series, with the final anode being used to host bacteria. This small set of cells on its own isn't even sufficient to produce usable current. But when directly linked to the bacterial system, it gave them a sufficient boost to liberate hydrogen, so long as they were supplied with organic matter (in their experiments, the authors used acetate). Increasing the flow of water through the cells boosted the production rate, and hydrogen continued to be released until the acetate was exhausted.

The efficiency was rather impressive. At slower flow rates, the total energy content of the hydrogen was 36 percent of the energy input into the system in the form of acetate. At this flow rate, about 85 percent of the energy stored in the hydrogen came from the salt-fresh water difference. The bacteria took the remainder of the energy from the acetate, using it for their continued survival and growth. Pumping water through the system only accounted for about one percent of the energy cost".

I posted this in the wrong post earlier. I've done so, as this experiment was done on a small scale, in a lab. On a planetary scale, in a relatively sealed ecosystem, you could use it to power all kinds of things. Steer or create hurricanes, and redirect the energy to achieve all kinds of stuff.

NASA Radar Demonstrates Ability to Foresee Sinkholes

"Researchers Cathleen Jones and Ron Blom of NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, Calif., analyzed interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR) imagery of the area acquired during flights of the agency's Uninhabited Airborne Vehicle Synthetic Aperture Radar (UAVSAR), which uses a C-20A jet, in June 2011 and July 2012. InSAR detects and measures very subtle deformations in Earth's surface.

Their analyses showed the ground surface layer deformed significantly at least a month before the collapse, moving mostly horizontally up to 10.2 inches (260 millimeters) toward where the sinkhole would later form. These precursory surface movements covered a much larger area -- about 1,640 by 1,640 feet, (500 by 500 meters) -- than that of the initial sinkhole, which measured about 2 acres (1 hectare)".

Basically, NASA has a means of predicting where the next big thing will be in terms of sink holes. Given their mapping of salt, gypsum and karst rock within the US, I think they've been monitoring the 'situation' for a while now, and may even be predicting where it will lead.

Cosmo' the article/report above about laying mines near the main gas line into/out of the Ukraine may have something to do with the fire at the oil refinery.

Just like the GoM off Louisianna is a litteral spaghetti mass of pipes, so too is this area of the world (Ukraine, Caspian Sea, Black Sea, all the "-stans" etc)

The interconnectedness of all the pipes makes for surface and subsurface conduits to allow 'whatever' to travel.

I'd say a nice big warm bubble of either hot water, hot mud or mud with gas permiated through it.

There is a 'blast radius' around the hole, which has snow/ice like feathered debris, suggesting it liquefied or even became steam, and froze again. The rapid release of energy in steam form, would allow it to form quick ice crystals.

The swirling, bubbling red mud looks amazing. Different layers of temperature keeping it in check.

But definitely looks like an explosive exit.

Given the ice isn't covered in red mud, I'd say gas bubble eruption or explosion?

Might even be a mains pipe line with a hole in it, and a continuous flow down the rest of the pipe which is sort of creating an eddy, sucking the material that exited the pipe back into it.

Researchers Confirm “Black Substance” Is Fukushima Reactor Fuel

"In a peer reviewed paper released this week by the journal Environmental Science & Technology, a Japanese team of researchers has concluded that portions of the “black substance” found in Japan is nuclear fuel fragments from Fukushima Daiichi.

Discoveries of the black residue along roadsides in and near the evacuation zone have been going on since at least 2011. Most were initially found by local citizens doing radiation monitoring. Some of these black substance sightings have been as far away as parts of Tokyo, The paper only studied those found in the evacuation zones.

Marco Kaltofan made a similar conclusion in their research of a sample of the black substance, that it was at least in part containing reactor fuel".
