Quoting: Green Witch *eyes narrow* Sigh. Not your average stacy, despite appearances. However, also... "to theoretically drive a craft"; 7, depending on the craft, in theory. Is this the thread you said you have questions for me? Yes. Glad you stopped by :) Keep in mind when I ask questions that I'm a complete noob when it comes to stuff like this so go easy on me lol I guess my first question would be how could a tokomak reactor be used for space travel? 2nd question would be how far along are we when it comes to using fusion in place of solid fuels *star trek nerd here* At the Joint Propulsion Conference around 1988, IIRC, there was a Japanese concept to bleed some of the plasma off a tokamak to provide propulsion. I actually had din din with Dr. Bussard who originated the Bussard Ram Jet. It would magnetically capture hydrogen from the interstellar medium and use it for fuel. In theory, it could approach light speed since it did not have to carry fuel. We are a long way from that. My fave is nuclear-thermal propulsion. We demonstrated that in 1971. It was a pebble bed fission reactor about the size of a large trash can that generated 5 GIGAWATTS of heat. With that and some water from near Earth asteroids, we can travel as far as the Main Belt Asteroids without refueling. I hope the guys working on accelerated pellet fusion succeed. It is time for a new fuel source. BTW, first SF book I ever read as a child: [link to www.youtube.com (secure)] They were using nuclear-thermal to travel all over the inner Solar System. Written in 1952, IIRC. Ad astra I actually have that book in my library. Along with Asimov, Heinlein, Verne and others. Great books. So at what power level does it take to create high energy plasma from toroidal fusion and then use that to create a magnetic field to theoretically drive a craft? Do you know the name of a SiFi book that has humanoid dogs that think with hive mind, the last human from earth that gets lost in space, meets these dogs, there is also this human from a different planet that meets the person from space and they fall in love...and I cant remember the damn name of that book and it was one of my favorites. It's been like 16 years since I read it. Freedom isn't free. |

Sorry, I used to read at least one SF book per day when I was a kid. When I became an adult it was reading industry news, new tech, etc. No more time for fun SF. Hell, I was LIVING in SF. My fave years ago was Analog magazine. They would take a particular tech or scenario each month and do both analysis and stories. I learned a lot from them. |
