Re: The Witch's Corner
So at what power level does it take to create high energy plasma from toroidal fusion and then use that to create a magnetic field to theoretically drive a craft?

Sigh.

Not your average stacy, despite appearances.
However, also...

"to theoretically drive a craft"; 7, depending on the craft, in theory.

So if it's craft driving it's not really a theory, in theory.

That's the assumption, it's so far off.
I think though the reality is that it only takes one game changer. Like true free energy.
Historically, especially recent history shows us this clearly.
Take the steam engine and automobiles. Computing. etc.

The best example might be the internet though. Wooooosh!
Coz reasons, probably.

We SHOULD be on Luna, mining asteroids, etc.

Some inside info:

1. Contractors had little incentive to push for new launch vehicles. They made so much off Shuttle. Plus, NASA paid piddly profit fees. DoD paid far more, so the aerospace lobbyists focused there.

2. There is hostility from many congressmen. They are mostly lawyers and don't understand the importance of the High Frontier. Once, a lawyer in DC asked me about the space program, "Where is the constituency for that? How much funding are they putting into campaigns?"

So, the programs that get pushed are those whose sponsors pay to play.

We have had the tech to go to Luna and the asteroids for a long time. The hurdle is FINANCIAL. It will take TRILLIONS to get the space economy going.

However, the resources are there. Someday, humans will do it.

But also if you're remotely driving a nano-craft the power level required is far less, in theory.

None of it happened. Suddenly it became a thing to be laughed at. It became the realm of conspiracy.

Well consider that right now where we're at as a species is not looking good. We're about to see some really dark times and frankly there is a chance we may get reset all the way back to the beginning. But in any war, disease or disaster there are survivors. Those survivors rebuild. It's always been this way. There will be new technologies and systems brought about by a need to survive a new environment.

Another story:

In 1983 Prez Reagan gave his famous Star Wars speech.

The VP for Advanced Engineering got 150 engineers in the auditorium at Downey.

He asked plaintively, "Does ANYBODY here know something about space weapons?

As a longtime SF reader, I raised my hand and said, "YO!"

A few months later we flew our first SDI experiment on Shuttle. My idea and it was a success.

My work led to the contract for integration of the entire defense system. Boeing ended up with it after they bought Rockwell Aerospace. It was $6B or so.

Sooo, I earned my pay.

I agree that there needs to be a fundamental change in humanity as well. I feel like that will happen as a natural evolution. Again out of necessity for survival. The humanity that rises out of the ashes will no longer tolerate the ways of the past.

"Ha we're going to control you through food and energy production"

"No you won't. We'll just slaughter you and be done with it"

Humanity is too complacent right now. But it won't be after the collapse.

Yes. Glad you stopped by :)

Keep in mind when I ask questions that I'm a complete noob when it comes to stuff like this so go easy on me lol

I guess my first question would be how could a tokomak reactor be used for space travel?

2nd question would be how far along are we when it comes to using fusion in place of solid fuels

At the Joint Propulsion Conference around 1988, IIRC, there was a Japanese concept to bleed some of the plasma off a tokamak to provide propulsion.

I actually had din din with Dr. Bussard who originated the Bussard Ram Jet. It would magnetically capture hydrogen from the interstellar medium and use it for fuel. In theory, it could approach light speed since it did not have to carry fuel. We are a long way from that.

My fave is nuclear-thermal propulsion. We demonstrated that in 1971. It was a pebble bed fission reactor about the size of a large trash can that generated 5 GIGAWATTS of heat.

With that and some water from near Earth asteroids, we can travel as far as the Main Belt Asteroids without refueling.

I hope the guys working on accelerated pellet fusion succeed. It is time for a new fuel source.

BTW, first SF book I ever read as a child:

They were using nuclear-thermal to travel all over the inner Solar System. Written in 1952, IIRC.

I actually have that book in my library. Along with Asimov, Heinlein, Verne and others. Great books.

So at what power level does it take to create high energy plasma from toroidal fusion and then use that to create a magnetic field to theoretically drive a craft?

Do you know the name of a SiFi book that has humanoid dogs that think with hive mind, the last human from earth that gets lost in space, meets these dogs, there is also this human from a different planet that meets the person from space and they fall in love...and I cant remember the damn name of that book and it was one of my favorites. It's been like 16 years since I read it.

Sorry, I used to read at least one SF book per day when I was a kid.

When I became an adult it was reading industry news, new tech, etc. No more time for fun SF.

Hell, I was LIVING in SF.

My fave years ago was Analog magazine. They would take a particular tech or scenario each month and do both analysis and stories. I learned a lot from them.

sci-fi has always fascinated me. The stories but mostly the technology and human advancement is some far off future.

Have you played the mass effect series?
