Seer777 Ride the wings of the mind User ID: 50018194 United States 07/02/2014 04:52 PM Report Abusive Post Report Copyright Violation | Warning, high voltage: scientists solve mysteries of electric fish Quoting: Seer777 Scientists have wondered about how these fish first acquired electric powers and how this characteristic emerged six times in groups not closely related to one another. "Electric organs start out their lives as muscle precursor cells. Through a series of developmental steps, they become larger, more electrically excitable and lose their ability to contract," Gallant said. All muscle cells have electrical potential because any muscle contraction releases a small amount of voltage. Certain fish exploited that by transforming ordinary muscle cells into a larger type of cell called an electrocyte that generates vastly higher voltages. The electric organ is made of these cells. "Each electric organ cell makes only a small voltage, similar in magnitude to our own muscles. The secret of electric organs is that the cells are aligned in stacks and electrically insulated so that the voltages add like batteries in a series," University of Texas neuroscience professor Harold Zakon said. [link to news.yahoo.com] oh is the snake we see the eel (el) that prompted the notion of snakes to be seen electrically The Nile fish was well known to the ancient Egyptians. Stories say the Egyptians used this type of catfish when treating some nervous diseases.[citation needed] They would use only smaller fish, as a large fish may generate an electric shock from 300 to 400 volts. The Egyptians have depicted the fish in their mural paintings and elsewhere; the first known depiction of an electric catfish is on a slate palette of the predynastic Egyptian ruler, Narmer, about 3100 BC. It was suitably called "angry catfish" in ancient egyptian. Quoting: observationAn account of its electric properties was given by an Arab physician of the 12th century; then as now, the fish was known by the suggestive name of raad, abo el raash,el raad or raash, which means "thunder" (literally "trembler" or "shaker"). Though the shock an electric catfish can generate is not known to be fatal to humans, the catfish does use its electricity as a weapon to ward off predators or to kill its prey. The electric shock that could cure a headache by releasing the body's most powerful painkillers Scientists have managed to release the body's most powerful painkillers by running an electrical current through the brain. The breakthrough has provided hope for sufferers of chronic migraine after it was found to reduce the pain of a headache by up to 37 per cent. The technique, known as deep brain stimulation, or transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), alters the speed at which the brain's neurons fire. This, in turn, can relieve pain. The painkillers released by the brain were endogenous opioids - the human body’s most powerful, euphoria-inducing painkillers that are very similar to opiates such as morphine. ELECTRIC EELS - SHOCK THERAPY Although it looks like an eel, Electrophorus Electricus is actually a Knife Fish that is able to generate and deliver significant electric shocks of up to 600 volts. The ancient Egyptians referred to an electric catfish, Malapterurus Electricus, as the "Thunderer of the Nile" which indicates that they had already made the connection to storm-related atmospheric discharges - lightning. According to various sources the Greeks and Romans were familiar with these creatures and may well have bred them in captivity. Historic records show that they were certainly farming many other types of exotic fish both for food and for amusement. Scribonus Largus, a physician at the court of the Roman Emperor Claudius (c.47AD), is reported to have written that these 'torpedo fish' could be used to treat a wide variety of ailments. They were used to numb the feet of gout sufferers as well as those suffering from persistent headaches. If this is true then this is the first recorded use of shock therapy. As recently as 2009 doctors in Boston have been successfully experimenting with electric currents to block migraines. [link to www.aquiziam.com] [link to en.wikipedia.org] Resurrection?
