Matilda Electa Joslyn Gage

Matilda Electa Joslyn Gage (March 24, 1826 – March 18, 1898) was an American Theosophist known for her activism in the areas of women's suffrage, Native American rights, and abolition of slavery. She was raised as a freethinker, and became a prolific author.

She was one of the three leaders in the nineteenth-century struggle for women’s rights and especially an effort to gain the voting franchise. She was a passionately devoted Theosophist, in character not unlike H. P. Blavatsky, especially in her scorn for organized religion, although her political activism was all her own.

Having rejected conventional faith and the churches that espouse it, Matilda discovered a kindred soul in H. P. Blavatsky and proceeded to share the discovery with her children and grandchildren.

Gage said her association to Theosophy had been the "crown blessing" of her life and introduced her daughter Maud and his husband L. Frank Baum (the author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz) to the Theosophical Society.

 Quoting: Seer777

Matilda was born on March 24, 1826 in Cicero, NY (near Syracuse) to Hezekiah and Helen Joslyn. Her father was a noted abolitionist who educated his daughter to be a “freethinker”. Their home in Fayetteville, NY was a station on the Underground Railroad that secretly conducted escaped slaves to safety in Canada. This work was dangerous and illegal under the terms of the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850, but the family continued its efforts for years.

Mrs. Gage was an active figure in the woman’s rights movement and other social causes throughout her life. She was coauthor, with Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony, of the three-volume History of Woman Suffrage, and was one of the prominent early members of the National Woman Suffrage Association

This woman was a rockstar of the late 1800s for women's rights.

Why have I never heard of her? They named the 'reason' after her..

Matilda effect

The Matilda effect is a bias against acknowledging the achievements of those women scientists whose work is attributed to their male colleagues.

This effect was first described by suffragist and abolitionist Matilda Joslyn Gage (1826–98) in her essay, "Woman as Inventor" (first published as a tract in 1870 and in the North American Review in 1883). The term "Matilda effect" was coined in 1993 by science historian Margaret W. Rossiter.

Of all the tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of its victims may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under the omnipotent moral busybodies.

The robber barons cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated; but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end, for they do so with the approval of their own conscience.”

Re: Mad World
His mother-in-law Matilda, was a heroine in her own right. Sitting shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Susan B Anthony and championing women's rights at the time.

She believed very strongly that religion existed to oppress women. I agree with her.

20 years after Frank died, Maud was there to see Wizard of Oz open in the theater and called it one of the, greatest moments of her life.

Spending time over at r/atheism for a welcomed break from religiosity.. Recommend the recent thread written by an Islamic woman yesterday.

I’m a woman who studied Islam in school for 12 years and this is how Islam is really treating women

 Quoting: Seer777

I’m a woman who studied Islam in school for 12 years and this is how Islam is really treating women

I was born in a very Islamic conservative country and its education system requires you to learn 4 religious subjects (quran, hadiths, fiqh, tawhid) per term and 2 other religious subjects(tafseer and tajweed) once per school. I basically studied Islam for 12 years and learned all of its sides. I wanted to write this post because I got tired of all these fake apologists trying to deny our struggles and justify their unfair religion.

A woman body is Awra (awra means something forbidden to look at in Islam and in Arabic it means a flaw or demerit) so she is forced to cover up.

Women’s voices are considered awra which means no man (other than her family and uncles) should hear it unnecessarily.

The wife cannot leave her house without her husband’s agreement.

If a man smelled a woman’s perfume she is as guilty as a zaniah (woman who had premarital sex).

In a Sahih Hadith Mohammad said that women are the majority of the people whom are going to hell.

In another Sahih Hadith Mohammad said that women are incomplete in both religion and mind.

Beating wives is allowed in Islam if they’re not “obeying” their husbands.

A woman obeying her husband is a part (or way) of obeying Allah. Obeying husband is considered more important than obeying her parents in Islam.

A woman can’t divorce her husband but he can divorce her even if he doesn’t have a vaild reason.

A woman cannot object against her husband marrying another wife.

A man should give an amount of money to his future wife which is considered a justification for all the inequality above (seems like buying a slave me thinks).

Women in Islam can’t lead people. There is a Sahih Hadiths that says: a nation would never succeed if a woman led them.

A woman cannot have custody of her kids if she married another man.
marital rape is allowed. If a woman refused to have sex with her husband the angels will curse her until the sun goes up.

Men can marry kids literally but can’t have sex with them before they got their period. Muhammad married Aisha when she was 6 years and had sex with her when she was 9.

Women inheritance is half their brothers’.

Women testimony is half men’s testimony.

Women can’t be judges.

Woman’s kids cannot have her surname

Women cannot marry non-muslim men, however men can marry non-muslim women.

There is a Sahih hadith that says: women come in devil shape and go in devil shape. Its explanation is women seems like devils because they’re “seductive” to men so they shouldn’t walk between men unless it’s necessary. (Victim blaming at its finest)

Men will have plenty of virgin good looking women in Heaven. Women will have none, instead they will have their husbands in heaven.

It wasn't much different in the 1850s for women in America and it took 70 years for women to fight for their right for the Vote.

It was not 'given'. It was fought for, inch by bloody inch over 70 years and 50 years after African American males, won the right vote.

Early this morning I watched two people, one highlighted by a red circle, fall from a plane.

That's pure human desperation and it is failing on all of humanity here in 2021.

Feel free to point out any part of this trip through history leading up to today on this page or the previous, would be considered propaganda.

A Victorian Magazine Asked Spinsters Why They Were Single, And The Answers Were Incredibly Savage

A Victorian-era competition likely would have been forgotten to history if not for the work of Dr. Bob Nicholson, who shared his find on Twitter. In 1889, Tit-Bits magazine offered a prize to the spinster who could provide the best answer to the question: Why are you still single? The results proved far too hilariously on point for the magazine to choose just a single winner. Instead, they published their favorites and gave each winner five shillings – the equivalent of about $26 today.

Speaking of beer..I was surprised to hear the Temperance movement was attached the Woman's Suffrage at one point, which led to it being looked unfavorably upon by males, to later find out that it was due to drunken domestic violence and spending all one's money at the saloon with nothing left for the nearly powerless wife left at home with the kids.

A lot of women watched their kids starve. A blessing most don't see today, but some still do.
