Frank Zappa

Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American musician, composer, guitarist, singer, songwriter and bandleader. His work is characterized by nonconformity, free-form improvisation, sound experiments, musical virtuosity and satire of American culture.

In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa composed rock, pop, jazz, jazz fusion, orchestral and musique concrète works, and produced almost all of the 60-plus album's that he released with his band the Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist.

Zappa also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. He is considered one of the most innovative and stylistically diverse musicians of his generation.

Re: Mad World
While he disapproved of drug use, he criticized the War on Drugs, comparing it to alcohol prohibition, and stated that the United States Treasury would benefit from the decriminalization and regulation of drugs.

Describing his philosophical views, Zappa stated, "I believe that people have a right to decide their own destinies; people own themselves. I also believe that, in a democracy, government exists because (and only so long as) individual citizens give it a 'temporary license to exist'—in exchange for a promise that it will behave itself.

In a democracy, you own the government—it doesn't own you.

...

Zappa was an atheist. He recalled his parents being "pretty religious" and trying to make him go to Catholic school despite his resentment.

He felt disgust towards organized religion (Christianity in particular) because he believed that it promoted ignorance and anti-intellectualism. He held the view that the Garden of Eden story shows that the essence of Christianity is to oppose gaining knowledge.

Some of his songs, concert performances, interviews and public debates in the 1980s criticized and derided Republicans and their policies—President Ronald Reagan, the Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI), televangelism, and the Christian Right—and warned that the United States government was in danger of becoming a "fascist theocracy.

What a dummy...

Imagine thinking you give a democracy license to exist...

Well actually you do, if you and two wolves all decide that you'll vote on who is for dinner, then yeah, you license your life away...

There is a reason why you are a voter and not an elector...

There is a reason why republic is what it is...

You literally have zero rights that you can't assert.

The men who created this nation didn't care about your opinions nor did they care if you were too dumb to get it, they simply did what men do and asserted themselves, for better or worse.

The Right of Self Determination is also a responsibility.

"I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them.

I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.

~Heinlein

Robert A. Heinlein

Robert Anson Heinlein (July 7, 1907 – May 8, 1988) was an American science fiction author, aeronautical engineer, and naval officer. Sometimes called the "dean of science fiction writers", he was among the first to emphasize scientific accuracy in his fiction, and was thus a pioneer of the subgenre of hard science fiction.

His published works, both fiction and non-fiction, express admiration for competence and emphasize the value of critical thinking. His plots often posed provocative situations which challenged conventional social mores. His work continues to have an influence on the science-fiction genre, and on modern culture more generally.

Heinlein became one of the first American science-fiction writers to break into mainstream magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post in the late 1940s. He was one of the best-selling science-fiction novelists for many decades, and he, Isaac Asimov, and Arthur C. Clarke are often considered the "Big Three" of English-language science fiction authors.

Notable Heinlein works include Stranger in a Strange Land, Starship Troopers (which helped mold the space marine and mecha archetypes) and The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. His work sometimes had controversial aspects, such as plural marriage in The Moon is a Harsh Mistress, militarism in Starship Troopers and technologically competent women characters that were formidable, yet often stereotypically feminine—such as Friday.

^It is wise to understand that those of us who grew up like this..are in our late 30s, early to mid40s now. Most have kids, mortgages, and careers. Our youth was spent in malls, wearing jelly bracelets, and roller skates. Skateboards.

Reminds of an old Chinese adage..

Do not raise your children like your parents raised you. They were born for a different time.

I think that really just sums it up. Over 80 is extremely elderly and has no place making any future they see fit.

They were born for a different time.

 Quoting: Anonymous Coward 78465591

I sang that song. Countless times in Christian grade school, sitting in Chapel.

To be fair, the school had a vibrant arts program and we spent much of our time learning to dance, sing and act in school-wide productions.

Albeit it with a religious angle.

I could have been learning other things like science, history and math, civics.. Not sitting in chapel and reciting the Beatitudes.

I do love to sing though. So that part was fun.

I drew a perfect Bart Simpson on my brother's binder and they made him take it home and couldn't bring it back.

Bart Simpson was too edgy for our grade school. lol

Thread: 'Wait for the rapture': Children among 77 kept in Nigeria church basement

‘Police in Nigeria have freed at least 77 people who were kept in a church basement by pastors who preached to them about Christian believers ascending to heaven with the second coming of Jesus Christ, authorities said Sunday.

The people rescued Friday night from the church in Ondo state included 23 children, some as young as eight years old. Local residents told The Associated Press that some Whole Bible Believer Church members had been kept there since last year.

Two pastors are in custody, although investigators have not found evidence indicating the church members were "abused and/or forced" to stay in the basement‘
